Windows XP no longer supported by Microsoft

On April 8, Microsoft ceased to support Windows XP with security patches. According to OSU security, after that date any computers running the Windows XP operating system became out of compliance with OSU rules and as such are subject to automatic removal from the OSU networks due to security vulnerabilities. Therefore XP will no longer be supported by ASCTech. Please work with your department to upgrade or replace if you’re running XP.

Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6 no longer supported by Apple

According to OSU security any computers running these operating systems are out of compliance with OSU rules and subject to automatic removal from the OSU networks due to security vulnerabilities. Therefore Mac OSX 10.6 or earlier is no longer supported by ASCTech. Please work with your department to upgrade or replace.

Microsoft releases Office for iPad

But there are license restrictions that might get in your way. Office apps are free to download, but you can only use the apps to view and present (read-only) Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file. You cannot edit documents without an Office365 subscription, which costs $99.99 and can be purchased within the app itself.  Purchasing this subscription requires an Apple ID with a credit card or gift card on file.

AttWiFi and osuguest wireless networks retired on April 15th

The new unsecured guest wireless on campus is called WiFi@OSU. Secured OSUWireless accounts can only be obtained via the OSU sponsored guest account process. ASCTech can no longer provision guest logins or wireless accounts. Learn about the new wireless network here: OSU Wireless page .

Sponsored Ohio State guest accounts available

Click here to learn more about setting up accounts for sponsored guests. NOTE: Begin the process at least two business weeks in advance. The process requires a fair amount of data acquisition on your part.

New OSU Apple computer purchasing standards announced

Since Apple does not give OSU a significant discount on these models, departments may purchase off standard while still receiving the same discount. Additionally, ASCTech recommends purchasing the three-year AppleCare warranty instead of the four-year WiredOut warranty, especially for mobile devices. This is due to the flexibility it gives you in having your computer repaired.  There are thousands of Apple stores around the world that offer walk-in repair service, but only one WiredOut store, and it's located here on campus.  If you don't need the ability to get service while traveling or if you are purchasing a desktop for an office on the main OSU campus, you may want to consider the 4-year warranty offered by WiredOut so you are covered for an additional year.
