ASCTech leads cutting edge video conferencing

Equipment and personnel of 145 Hagerty

The Kermit Hall Video-conference Center in 145 Hagerty is now available to instructors in the College of Arts and Sciences beyond the languages. The Center for Languages, Literature and Cultures worked with SteelCase Inc. after winning the Active Learning Center Grant to set up the Active learning Center - a collaboration classroom featuring the latest in videoconferencing technology and flexible classroom furniture.

Instructors can

  • Teach from either side of room
  • Arrange furniture to accommodate a variety of classroom interactions
  • Project audio and video onto easily viewable screens
  • Record courses for later review (on request)

“The room has been popular for a variety of our classes, from Moving Images to Russian to Polish,” said Sujan Manandhar, “It often gets used for online courses with the Big Ten Educational Consortium: Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, and so on.”

Pil Ho Kim, Assistant Professor of Korean, has been part of this academic exchange and his courses have been exported to other campuses. He recommends the Smartboard “because writing on the board shows up on the computer and is easily shared with students.”

Associate Dean Valarie Williams used the classroom as part of a committee that videoconferenced with artists applying for a CBEC grant. “It allows a conversation with the artists from a distance and viewing of the proposals that’s better time management.” It also “allows the funding to be spent on the art and not flying artists in for proposal talks.” Williams found the facility to be “a very professional experience for the faculty staff and artists. Sujan and his team were absolutely helpful and conscientious, even doing test runs with artists ahead of time.”

If you’d like to use the classroom, please contact Sujan manandhar.1@osu.edu. Space is available for spring semester.
